In the penultimate part of his documentary series, Werner Nekes presents the history of our fascination with multi-dimensionality. Moviegoers today are likely to identify three-dimensional images with modern-era filmmaking, but the technique has a long history. From mannerism’s ambiguous space, through dioramas (multi-dimensional panoramas painted on canvases of varying thickness) and peep shows, to the stereoscope (an optical device allowing a viewer looking at two identical pictures to obtain the impression of depth), Nekes shows that multi-dimensionality is no modern invention.
