Film description

In 1968 Wojciech Has made his eighth film, the most demanding one in his career. After The Saragossa Manuscript, The Doll was another superproduction, employing many famous actors and involving time-consuming preparations. First shooting started as early as October 1967 in Radziejowice near Warsaw. Has faced a serious challenge: he had to find an on-screen equivalent of the epic style and form of the novel. He knew that his project would be compared to the literary original and that he may fail to satisfy the most exigent audiences. And yet, Has did not intend to illustrate the novel, he wanted to interpret it. Before he started filmmaking, he prepared detailed documentation of the epoch. Finally, he made not only a story about the unrequited love of a Warsaw merchant, Stanisław Wokulski (Mariusz Dmochowski), to the countess Izabela Łęcka (Beata Tyszkiewicz), but a work about an outsider, a man who does not fit in the reality he has to live in. The feeling of entrapment in an unacceptable life was the beginning of Wokulski’s end. He could only be saved by love, but – unfortunately – he chose the wrong person.
