The main character is Paweł, a young boy from a wealthy bourgeois family, who cannot find his place in his original environment. He visits a night club, where he meets a dancer, Lidka. He spends more than ten hours with her. In time, the meeting turns into mutual fascination. Has’s Partings can be ranged together with such films as Goodby to the Past and Gold Dreams as a single lyrical and ironical triptych. But in fact, only the first film balances the two aspects perfectly. The director repeated after the author that the composition and lyrical atmosphere of the film were significantly influenced by sonata no. 6 by Ludwig van Beethoven (Les Audieux, Op. 81 a) of 1809-10. The motives of encounter, parting and return form the three parts of the musical composition and correspond with the love story of the film. From the beginnings of his artistic activities, Has was interested in life as a game, he analysed conventional behaviours and misunderstandings. This interest made Partings a multidimensional piece of art, referring to a range of partings, including those with the pre-war reality and its inhabitants. Iwona Grodź |
