Film description

Feature-length debut of Wojciech Has, based on a novel by Marek Hłasko. A disturbing story about twenty four hours in the life of Kuba (Gustaw Holoubek) – an alcoholic who resolves for the last time to quit drinking. The film is set in half-real, half-phantasmagorical scenery of an anonymous city. The narration, focused on the main character, starts at eight a.m. to end at eight a.m. the next day. A grey, autumnal day. Kuba is at home, waiting for his fiancée, who is supposed to take him to a doctor in the afternoon. Telephones from colleagues and internal anxiety make him go out. There, he is left alone with his weakness – his irresistible compulsion to get drunk. Suspended for a couple of hours in the peculiar state of waiting for his fiancée, hope for a change and an atmosphere of overwhelming memories, he wanders through the city, attempting not to drink. But even the first glass of vodka at a bar means failure. Kuba surrenders to his addiction again.

In every detail, The Noose is a masterly existential drama. A revelation of Has’s visual expression and the motif of time experienced by man, one very important theme in his work.
