Born in 1918, died in 1983. American director, screenwriter, and producer. He studied economics but dropped out to work for RKO Radio Pictures. Aldrich’s worked as assistant director with Joseph Losey, Charlie Chaplin, and Jean Renoir. His directorial debut is The Big Leaguer (1953), soon followed by the noir classic Kiss Me Deadly (1955), and Autumn Leaves (1956), which won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. Aldrich had a string of hits in the 1960s, with the excellent thriller What Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), lesbian tension tinged The Killing of Sister George (1968) and the war film, The Dirty Dozen (1967). Aldrich’s work exemplifies auteur filmmaking and superb technical abilities.
